Smarter Water, Better Service for All of St. Petersburg
The City of St. Petersburg has chosen to partner with Johnson Controls to design and implement an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system. We will be replacing the existing, aging mechanical water meters with new, electromagnetic water meters. These new electromagnetic water meters will keep their accuracy for the next 20 years. The new water meters and AMI system will quickly detect leaks at your residence or business, and the customer engagement portal will promptly notify you of important issues and show you how water is being used at your property every hour of every day.
How This Project Benefits Our Community
The new AMI system will give our utility near real-time visibility into the entire water network so that we can operate more efficiently and serve you better.
Faster Leak Detection
Smart meters transmit hourly usage data, alerts, and alarms four times per day, every day, allowing our team to identify unusual consumption patterns that signal leaks — often before you even notice a problem.
Accurate Billing
The new AMI system will virtually eliminate manual reading errors and estimated bills. Every water bill will reflect your actual usage — nothing more, nothing less.
Reduced Truck Rolls
Remote meter reading means fewer trucks on the road for routine reads, reducing operational costs and our environmental footprint across the city.
Near Real-Time Data
Having the hourly usage data from every service connection in the water distribution system updated four times each day lets our engineers monitor system health, plan maintenance proactively, and respond to issues around the clock.
What This Means for Residents & Businesses in St. Petersburg
The AMI system isn't just about our infrastructure — it's about giving you accurate billing, exceptional customer service and support, increasing utility efficiency, and giving you greater confidence in your water service.
Once the AMI system is installed, you will have access to the hourly usage data through a customer portal — so you can track your consumption, spot unusual spikes, and make informed decisions about water use at home or at your business.
Say goodbye to estimated billing. Every statement will reflect your actual water usage, read automatically and accurately. No surprises, no corrections, and no guesswork.
The new AMI system promptly informs the water utility if there is condition at your water service that needs to be addressed.
Operational savings from AMI — fewer truck rolls, reduced manual labor, and early leak detection — translate to long-term cost efficiencies that help keep rates stable for all customers.
